Daily briefing: MLK Day snow & gusty winds

10:00 AM
January 20, 2026

Daily briefing
Brisk Tuesday for eastern half

Other than lake effect snow possible across the Lower Great Lakes' Snowbelt and snow moving across the northern Plains, a quiet but mostly cold Tuesday is ahead. The daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows snow showers across the lower Great Lakes and Northeast today. Additionally, a clipper system will scooch into the northern Plains, bringing fluffy snow with impacts during both the morning and evening commutes. Otherwise, the rest of the U.S. is quiet today.

Highs stay wintry in much of the eastern two-thirds. Teens and 20s spread from the northern Plains through the Tennessee Valley and through the Northeast, while sub-zero to single digits remain across the Upper Midwest. Temperatures in the 40s will be found across the Mountain West through the southern Plains and eastward to the Southeast.

Florida will be in the 40s and 50s in the northern half, with 60s still keeping things cool in the southern half. The West Coast will be in the 40s and 50s, with 60s and 70s spreading throughout southern California and the Desert Southwest.
