5.3 magnitude quake rattled West Texas

West Texas Earthquake details

Residents of West Texas were shaken early Wednesday morning as a moderate earthquake impacted the area. It was one of the strongest earthquakes recorded since 1900.

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck 23 miles west-southwest of Mentone, Texas, at around 4:27 a.m. (CST) Wednesday, jolting some residents out of bed. The shaking was felt in El Paso, Texas, and into southeastern New Mexico.

There have been several aftershocks in the wake of this 5.3-magnitude earthquake, the strongest so far registering a magnitude of 3.4, with five other aftershocks ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 3.2. While many felt the shaking, so far, there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

This earthquake is the fourth-strongest measured since records began in 1900. The strongest earthquake to hit Texas was a 6.0 magnitude quake that struck near Valentine, Texas on Aug. 16, 1931.
