Flood threat for the Southeast

Some flash flooding is possible across the Southeast as heavy rain and storms continue. Hot temperatures continue across the Southwest, while the Atlantic stays active. These details, along with our daily tropical outlook, are published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows showers and storms firing up again along a stationary front in the Southeast. With an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain on the way today, flash flooding will be possible across portions of Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas. Cities like Dothan, Ala., Atlanta, Greenville, S.C., and Asheville, N.C., should be on alert for potential flooding today.

A stalled front will bring possible flooding to the Southeast. A few strong storms are possible in the northern Plains.

Another system will bring the threat of severe weather to the northern Plains this afternoon and evening. Damaging wind, hail and isolated tornadoes are possible. Cities at risk include Bismarck, N.D., and Pierre, S.D.

Highs today will be cooler-than-average across the Southeast, where rain keeps high temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

The TemperatureRadar shows temperatures running above average across the Northeast and the Southwest. Highs in cities like Boston and New York will range from near 80 to the mid-80s, above average but still comfortable. In the Southwest, dangerous heat sticks around. Cities like Phoenix will warm to the 110s.

Tropical Update

The Atlantic hurricane basin is active. Tropical Storm Dexter will continue to move away from the East Coast and stay north of Bermuda this week. There are two areas to be watched over the next week for possible development. A stalled front in the Southeast could help create an environment ripe for organization, this area has a 40% chance of development over the next 7 days.

We are also keeping a close eye on a wave off the coast of Africa that has a 50% chance of development over the next 7 days.
