Another round of Midwest severe storms

Early hail storm across the Midwest

After last Friday’s wild day and night of deadly of severe storms, the Midwest and Mississippi Valley will have another afternoon and evening of big storms. Tornadoes are possible, but not as many as seen last week.

7:15 p.m. CT/ 8:15 p.m. ET

There have been six tornadoes reported in northern Illinois and southern Iowa. Several storm chasers have shared videos on twitter showing Iowa tornado ripping across a field.

6:45 p.m. CT/ 7:45 p.m. ET

New severe thunderstorm watches were posted across northeastern Kansas, northwestern Missouri and northeastern Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin. This includes the Kansas City area.

4 p.m. CT/ 5 p.m. ET

While storms begin to pop up across Iowa and Missouri, areas just to the northwest are experience a different type of extreme weather. Blizzard conditions are developing across much of South Dakota and most of the state's interstate system is shutdown.

3:15 p.m. CT/ 4:15 p.m. ET

The first Tornado Watch of the day has been posted. It extends across southern Iowa, northwestern Illinois and northern Missouri. It includes Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Dubuque, Iowa, Columbia, Mo., and Quincy, Ill.

2:20 p.m. CT / 3:20 p.m. ET

The atmosphere is getting increasingly unstable across the Mississippi Valley, Midwest and central Plains early this afternoon. There is an increasing likelihood of a tornado watch being issued in parts of southeastern Iowa, northern Missouri and western Illinois soon.

Earlier this afternoon, large hail was reported in parts of the Chicago area.

11:45 a.m. CT/ 12:45 p.m. ET

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been posted for northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana including all of the Chicago metropolitan area, Joliet and Aurora, Ill., and Gary, Ind.
