A brand new snowstorm is on its way for the eastern U.S. Two to 3 inches of snow are possible with more locally.

It's on its way! A snowstorm is brewing and will impact those across the Midwest today and tonight before moving further east by Friday. Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings have been issued.

We've got our eyes on a new snowstorm taking shape across the northern and central Plains today. Remember the winter storm that brought heavy freezing rain to the Pacific Northwest earlier this week? The energy from that storm is shifting east and will become the next system to pay attention to.

As we noted in the update on Wednesday, snow has developed in the northern and central Plains and has already brought heavy snow to the Dakotas and Nebraska with light snow already moving into the Upper Midwest.

The southern flank of the evolving storm has light rain showers with a wintry mix stretching across Mississippi, northwestern Alabama, and southwestern Tennessee. This will become more widespread across the mid-Mississippi Valley and western Tennessee Valley throughout the afternoon.

The WeatherRadar shows the afternoon commute getting messy from Minneapolis to Des Moines, Iowa, and to Lincoln, Neb. As this storm develops, we will see more showers come together across the Tennessee Valley and Southeast later throughout the afternoon and overnight.

The northern flank will shift into the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast overnight and by early Friday morning. Widespread snow totals could amount to 1 to 4 inches with higher elevations seeing as much as 6 inches, and locally more.

We can expect both school closings and delays as this storm shifts east before dawn Friday where the lower Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic will be added to the snowy mix.

This storm will be a quick hitter, with the bulk of it only lasting through Friday afternoon and evening. Behind the storm, an influx of cold, Arctic air will prompt lake-effect and Mid-Atlantic Appalachian snow showers through Saturday.

The mercury is expected to fall from west to east. Highs will top out in the single digits and teens across the Midwest Friday with the teens spreading into the Ohio Valley and Northeast Saturday.

There are 61 days until the Spring Equinox!

Make sure to have a winter emergency kit with you if you will be traveling during this storm, which includes work and school commutes. Weather & Radar meteorologists will be bringing frequent updates regarding the storm through the end of the week.
