Big storms tonight: hot and stormy Florida

Near record Florida heat
Big storms break sweltering heat

The Sunshine State is going to be sweaty and hot today with near record hot temperatures, extreme heat indices and massive storms bringing much-needed rain and some heat relief.

It is going to be hot and humid across central and southern Florida today. The TemperatureRadar shows low-to-middle 90s highs in Tampa, Orlando and Miami today. Miami could approach its daily temperature record high of 95 today.

Hot day ahead
Highs will be in the 90s across Florida

Although these temperatures don't sound hot, a tropical air mass already in place will make it feel even hotter. The feels-like temperatures will be in the 105 to 110 range, a dangerous level for outdoor activities. Make sure to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities.

The hot temperatures and high humidity will produce a highly unstable atmosphere and widespread thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening. A weak cold front making inroads across the panhandle will help generate additional storms across northern Florida.

The WeatherRadar shows these storms developing later this afternoon and continuing after dark. Localized flash flooding will be possible from the downpours that linger for several hours.
