Big temperature swings: ~60º difference in average temperature

Another week starts, and with the several threats on the table varying from severe storms, and blizzards to fire weather, record temperatures, both cold and hot, will also make headlines.

There is a sharp difference between the west and the east! Record cold temperatures extend from California through the Northern Plains. Mornings and afternoons will be very cold.

The afternoons will be farther away from average values, with some cities like Grand Junction, Co., will struggle to have the highs reach the 40s, and their average afternoon temperature for this time of the year is around 63. That´s over 20 degrees below average. Expect similar distance-from-average temperatures all the way to Rapid City, S.D., and Bismarck, N.D., where the coldest temperatures are expected on Tuesday afternoon.

Well-above-average temperatures are expected to be less than 1,000 miles away from the coldest-from-average. St. Louis will likely have highs in near 90 degrees, this is about 25 degrees above average!

But the heat will also expand from Texas through the Central Plains, southern Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast. There are over 2 dozen weather stations across the Central Plains and the Southeast that could break or tie record heat on Tuesday afternoon. Most notably, the lows will stay very warm on Wednesday morning. 65 weather stations expanding from Texas through the Northeast could tie or break hot low temperatures. Cities in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky will likely have lows 40 degrees above normal!

Another warm and muggy morning is slated for Thursday, this time from New England southward through Georgia. Close to 60 stations could tie or break record lows with temperatures that could be between 13 to 35 degrees above average.

As the cold front, the same one expected to ignite severe storms on Tuesday across the Central Plains, moves east, the cold air will move in right behind it. Temperatures will turn much cooler for the Central Plains on Wednesday and Thursday, while the East will remain warm still on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to return to closer to average values by the weekend, with the colder air mass shrinking, and only bringing colder-than-average temperatures for a few across the Mid-Atlantic through the coastal Northeast in the mornings. The afternoons will be noticeably cooler on Saturday and Sunday across from Texas through the Carolinas. Florida, you will stay slightly above average. Sorry!
