Big waves and volcanic eruptions in HI

It's been a busy few days in Hawaii with big waves and volcanic eruptions. The video above shows the latest eruption of the Kilauea volcano. Powerful winds and a storm in the Pacific helped create massive waves, allowing the world-famous Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational to take place on Sunday.

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted early Monday morning. The eruption, shown in the video above, started on the Halemaumau Crater on the Kilauea Summit around 2:30 a.m. local time and is ongoing. The WindRadar shows northeast flow, meaning ash may be carried across the communities of Pahala, Naalehu and Ocean View. Our air quality feature can help you determine if it's hazardous to be outdoors.

The North Shore of Oahu was abuzz over the weekend as massive waves on Sunday allowed the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational to take place for only the 11th time since its founding in 1984. The competition requires at least 40-foot waves by 8 a.m. the day of the competition to move forward.

A powerful storm system in the western Pacific and favorable winds allowed swells to reach these massive heights. High surf remains an issue on the North Shore.

If you are planning to catch some waves, make sure you check out the marine forecast! Our marine forecast shows waves higher than 10 feet and wind gusts up to 35 mph on Oahu's North Shore on Monday.
