Flooding threatens South

Breakfast brief for May 13th

May's second full week begins with the South once again being the center of attention. Big storms will bring the threat of major flooding for the next several days.

Flooding is a top U.S. weather killer

In 2024, the U.S. government reported 79 people died in flooding. Driving was the biggest cause of flood deaths, with 42 people dying.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar is showing heavy rain moving across the lower Mississippi Valley and into the South today. Several inches of rain is likely, with a few spots seeing more than 6 inches of rain today. Flood watches are posted from central Texas to the Florida Panhandle and residents should avoid roads that flood.

A few of the downpours will be accompanied by dangerous winds, hail and even an isolated tornado.

Rain will also be possible across the central Plains and the Great Lakes, but these showers will just ruin a few outdoor plans. Afternoon showers will also be possible across the Rockies and the western high Plains.
