Breakfast Brief: Milton approaches Fla.; U.S. stays quiet

09:00 AM
October 11, 2024

Breakfast Brief
Postcard autumn day

With Milton far out of the picture, the week can end with a breather nationwide. The sun will shine from coast to coast, with only a few interspersed clouds to gray the mood.

The WeatherRadar shows the sunny icon for most major cities in the U.S. Only a few clouds and showers will be possible across the Upper Midwest, western Great Lakes and the extreme Northeast. Although there will be plenty of sunshine, there will be a mix of two seasons nationally.

Key West Hurricane

On this day in 1846, Key West was hit by a hurricane. It destroyed all but 8 buildings on the island. It hit Havana, Cuba, the previous day, killing hundreds.

The TemperatureRadar shows another warm October day across the central and southern U.S. Highs will once again be in the 80s throughout the central U.S. and the Mountain West from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. Par for the course, the Southwest, interior and western Texas and interior southern California will be in the 90s and low triple-digits. These temperatures are well above average for this time of the year.

The East and will be chilly with highs only in the 50s and 60s in the Northeast and low to middle 70s in the Southeast and South.

Thursday's highs.

Tropical update:

The tropical focus turns away from Milton as it dissipates over the western Atlantic.

Tropical Storm Leslie is moving to the northeast far from land and will weaken as it moves over colder water and stronger upper-level winds. A new system rolling off the western African coast will need to be watched for development. All of these are far from land.
