Breakfast brief
Big storms for Upper Midwest

Friday review

The new work week kicks off with two spots of soggy trouble. One will be found across the Northwest while the other area extends across the central Plains northward into the Upper Midwest.

1860 Camanche Tornado

On this day in 1860, Iowa's infamous Camanche Tornado, likely an F5 storm, kills 92 and injures 200. Every home and business were destroyed in the town. It resulted in more farm fatalities than any other tornado except for the Tri-State tornado.

Today's weather outlook

WeatherRadar indicates two big summer storm systems, one in the Northwest and another rolling across the Plains and Midwest. The Central U.S. one, extending from the Central Plains northward into the Midwest, will include waves of severe thunderstorms across the Mississippi Valley and downpours soaking the Midwest too.

The Northwest will be soggy as a late-season Pacific storm brings rain and few thunderstorms ashore. Cooler temperatures accompany the rainfall.

Monday Heavy rain will move across the northern Plains while the Northwest stays soggy.

In contrast, it is going to start to feel more like summer across many parts of the U.S. Highs in the 90s and even a few triple digits will be possible this afternoon in the high western Plains and across the Southwest.
