Breakfast brief
Storms shift east, West heats up

Friday review

Early-summer heat wave takes a firm grip across the West with record-breaking afternoon temperatures likely across several states. On the East Coast, wet weather prevails Thursday morning, followed by much-below-average temperatures.

In June 2017, Las Vegas experienced one of its hottest days on record when temperatures soared to 117°F (47°C).

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar Thursday morning showers and thunderstorms along the Eastern Seaboard, making for a wet commute across the large metro areas like New York City and Boston. Some rainfall could be locally intense or long-lasting, so isolated flash flooding is possible, particularly across the Washington D.C.-Baltimore metro area.

Behind the front, which is sparking much of this activity, much cooler temperatures will make their way into the eastern U.S. Temperatures will range anywhere from 10 to even 20 degrees below average. Some spots of the Upper Midwest could even see overnight lows dip back into the 40s.

Across the West, over a dozen states are feeling above-average temperatures as the season's first major heat wave takes a firm grip. Dozens of record-high heat records will be challenged or broken, with temperatures running 20-30 degrees above average. The focus of heat will be across the Desert Southwest and California's Central Valley where temperatures are likely to exceed 110 and 100 degrees, respectively.
