Brief triple-digit reprieve: Southwest flood risk

02:55 PM
August 31, 2026

Brief triple-digit break
Southwest flood risk

Strong thunderstorms and localized downpours will keep the risk of flash flooding elevated across the Desert Southwest and the Great Basin today and Tuesday.

The WeatherRadar shows the widespread thunderstorm threat today stretching from Tucson and Phoenix into southern Utah. The driver of this heavy rain is an upper-level system tapping tropical moisture from the Pacific.

Desert downpours can quickly cause flooding, like seen in Saturday and Sunday in the Grand Canyon National Park, so drivers and anyone visiting the numerous national parks need to be wary of the weather and act quickly if a storm develops. Heed all warnings from local officials and act immediately if told to evacuate or head to higher ground.

Looking on the bright side, with cloud cover and stormy weather nearby, temperatures are moderating slightly over the next several days. Instead of triple digits, highs will only be in the 90s.
