Big storms expected: Wild ride for N. Plains

Big storms expected
Wild ride for N. Plains

Dangerous storms will roll across the northern Plains and into the Upper Midwest today, bringing the threat for large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.

A cold front moving out of the northern Rockies and upper northern Plains will streak eastward across the northern Plains today. Clashing with unseasonably hot airmass — the TemperatureRadar shows highs in the upper 80s as far north as the Dakotas and Minnesota — severe storms will quickly develop.

Big squall line
A big squall line is expected to move through the northern Plains today.

Moving rapidly eastward, these storms will form into a long line later this evening and overnight. This line, called a squall line, will be capable of producing destructive wind gusts that could cause massive power outages and knock down trees.

Bismarck and Fargo, N.D., Rapid City and Sioux Falls, S.D., could see storms through the evening with the Twin Cities and see the storm threat after midnight. Track the storms and their movement using the WeatherRadar.
