Central Plains & G. Lakes: Severe weather outbreak possible

Central Plains & G. Lakes
Severe weather outbreak possible

It is not too common when we see a severe threat so distinct 4 days out, but it is on a map! There is also a threat for 5 days out which is for Wednesday, April 17th. Let’s look at what is causing this and where the high risk will fall.

The setup calls for a pronounced dip in the jetstream curving back toward the northeast but centered over New Mexico. This will provide enough energy, combined with a low-pressure system near the surface dragging a cold front and plenty of warm and moist air coming in from the Gulf of Mexico, to drive the possible severe outbreak over the Central Plains on Tuesday. Central Oklahoma seems to be on the bullseye for the most action, but there could also be organized severed storms stretching from southwest Iowa through northern Texas.

On Wednesday, the severe weather will move eastward and mainly focus on the southern Great Lakes area through the Ozarks and northeast Texas. Some organized severe storms, including the chance for damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes will be possible.

Take this as your heads-up if you live in these areas. Next week will be a busy one for millions of people across the central U.S. We will be on duty, monitoring this system, and will continue to fine-tune the forecast to bring you prompt updates on our app and on our social media platforms. Stay tuned!
