Cold plunge for East, West's atmospheric river

Breakfast Brief
Cold for East, West's atmospheric river

While the strong cold front continues to impact the Southeast on Wednesday, we are monitoring the next incoming winter storm and atmospheric rivers that will wreak havoc in the West. The Breakfast Brief is published every Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Some strong isolated storms will move across Florida on Wednesday, pushed by a strong cold front that promises to bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far to the end of the week. The good news is that the deeper moisture that produced stronger downpours on Tuesday seems to be winding down, and showers will not be as intense for the Southeast and more isolated in nature.

Showers will extend through the Mid-Atlantic, and as the system breaks in two, another low-pressure system will travel over the Northeast late Wednesday into Thursday. This system will continue producing winter precipitation as cold air filters through the Great Lakes and interior Northeast. Winds will also pick up and continue to be strong through the end of the week.

An atmospheric river enters the Pacific Northwest. This channel of deep moisture will pose a high risk for flash floods across northern California and southwestern Oregon on Wednesday and Thursday. Plan carefully; these rains and heavy mountain snow could produce landslides. Power outages are possible, our WindRadar shows gusts that could exceed 50 mph. Keep your app alerts on and have at least three ways to receive a weather warning.
