Cool unofficial start to summer in SoCal with temperatures up to 15 degrees cooler

The calendar says May, but SoCal feels more like early April as a late-season bout of cool weather sticks around through the holiday weekend, and even beyond.

A large Pacific high-pressure system is the troublemaker this week for SoCal, at least for those who want warmer weather. High temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees cooler over the next several days, even through the coming holiday weekend.

Chilly, onshore flow is keeping the mercury at the record-breaking levels when temperatures are usually in the mid-70s this time of year in places like Los Angeles and Anaheim, Calif.

For today and tomorrow, Los Angeles and Oxnard, Calif., could come close to tying or breaking their cool high temperature records, going back as far as 1943. The TemperatureRadar shows highs only getting into the low 60s thanks to the onshore flow.

With this weekend being the unofficial start to summer, many across SoCal may be wondering where the warmer weather is hiding! You’ll have to look to the eastern half where most will be under a strong high-pressure ridge pumping in warmer temperatures.

When it comes to an increase in mercury levels for SoCal, residents will have to be patient. In the upper levels, the low-pressure troughing pattern is likely to stay consistent at least through the next week, which includes the Memorial Day holiday.
