    Cooldown hits northern Rockies

A short autumn preview
Cooldown hits northern Rockies

Cooler weather settles across the northern Rockies

An autumn preview has settled across the Northwest, northern Rockies and northern Plains, with highs only in the 70s today. This is in sharp contrast to the 90s and triple digits seen as recently as Saturday, which will return later this week.

The TemperatureRadar shows the much cooler temperatures today after a cold front rolled through this weekend. The front is lingering across the central Dakotas and Wyoming. South of the front, the Southwest and southern Rockies will be in the triple-digits today.

Just south of the front, gusty winds will kick up, as seen on the WindRadar. This will increase the risk of wildfires across the Rockies.

This small taste of autumn will move into the central Plains on Tuesday and Wednesday. The northern Plains and the rest of the Northwest and Great Basin will see a return to hot weather for the second half of the work week. Triple-digit highs return to Salt Lake City, Boise, Idaho, and Reno, Nev., by Thursday.
