Daily briefing
Autumn air mass settles in, rain for some

It's a busy Wednesday as a cold front exits the eastern seaboard leaving behind autumn temperatures for many. Wet and stormy weather will also be around in the southern Rockies, southern Plains and also the Pacific Northwest. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

An autumn cold front has been making its way across the eastern two-thirds the last several days and it will finally exit the East Coast for most today. Heavy rain continues through this morning from the Southeast to the Northeast and you can watch it move east on the WeatherRadar throughout the day.

Thunderstorms will pop up along the coastal Carolinas through the Florida Panhandle as the front runs into the warmer air mass in the southern tier. Have your alerts switched on to know when the strongest storms are expected.

Gusty winds forecast for the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic.Gusty winds forecast for the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic.

Not only is the front leaving behind cooler temperatures, but gusty winds will kick up today along the Lower Great Lakes, along the Appalachians and into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Watch the WindRadar for gusts up to 35 mph.

Further to the West, rain and thunderstorms are possible in the southern Plains and the southern Rockies as a low pressure moves through. Not to be outdone, isolated coastal showers will stretch from northern California to the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks to the previously mentioned autumn front, highs will only reach the 60s and low 70s from Bismarck, N.D., to Washington D.C., and up through Maine. The southern tier from Texas to the Carolinas and Florida will be in the warmer 80s and even low 90s. A mix of 60s and 70s will spread across the rest of the West with the exception of the Southwest where the mercury will reach the 90s and triple digits.

Tropical Update

Tropical Storm Jerry formed Tuesday morning and is churning east of the Lesser Antilles this morning and will likely become a hurricane today. Jerry is not expected to impact the U.S. as it will make a turn to the northwest and then to the north by this weekend.

We also continue to monitor a disturbance in the southern Gulf, albeit it has a low chance of development over the next 7 days.
