Daily briefing
A quiet but cold Tuesday

The U.S. will have a quiet Tuesday with the Northeast and Midwest freezing under a polar airmass. This is included in today's daily briefing, published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

A polar airmass that arrived late Monday will produce very cold temperatures from the northern Plains across the Great Lakes and the Midwest into the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. The TemperatureRadar shows afternoon highs in the 20s with New York City and Philadelphia barely reaching the middle 30s.

The cold air will be felt deep into the South and the Southeast. Atlanta will barely reach the low 40s while northern Florida will struggle to climb into the 50s. Even Orlando and Tampa won't hit 60 degrees.

On top of the cold temperatures, the WeatherRadar shows a few bursts of snow along with strong northwest wind will hit the Upper Midwest and the interior Northeast. This snow will cause slick roads, creating travel havoc.

The southern Plains and the western U.S. will also be quiet, but won't be nearly as cold. Seasonable 50s and 60s will be found across the Southwest and Texas, with a few desert locations of southern Arizona and southern California reaching the low 70s. The rest of the West will be in the 40s and 50s with a mostly sunny sky.
