Daily briefing: Chilly start to December

Daily briefing
Chilly start to December

The first day of December will bring snow to parts of the Midwest and rain to the Southeast. Below-average temperatures will persist across much of the country. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

The WeatherRadar shows an active winter-like pattern across the country. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along the Gulf Coast and extend inland across eastern Texas into the Southeast, while colder air to the north changes precipitation to a wintry mix and then snow across the central Plains into the Midwest.

From today into tonight, a broad area of light to moderate accumulating snow is expected from central Kansas through the Middle Mississippi Valley and into the Ohio Valley and Lower Great Lakes. Some lake-effect regions may see pockets of heavier snowfall. We'll also see some rain and mountain snow in the Pacific Northwest.

The TemperatureRadar shows chilly air across much of the country. Highs will stay in the teens and 20s across the northern Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. The deep chill extends into the South, where highs will only be in the 30s and 40s. The only warm spots will be the Southwest and Florida.
