Daily briefing
Eastern heat wanes slightly

Not to sound like one, but more broken records are likely today as a heat wave continues across the East and Midwest today. However, some stormy relief is on the menu for more parts of the U.S. The Weather & Radar daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET with the latest U.S. forecast and updated tropical information.

The heat wave that has lasted the entire work week across much of the East and South continues today. The TemperatureRadar shows highs in the 90s throughout the lower and central Mississippi and Ohio valleys and from the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and the I-95 corridor into Boston. A few triple-digit readings are possible around Washington, D.C.

Hot Wednesday across the Eastern U.S.Hot temperatures continue in the highly populated I-95 corridor of the U.S.

There will be relief from the heat in the form of more frequent but scattered afternoon thunderstorms throughout the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

More frequent thunderstorms will be common along the western and northern fringe of the hot airmass. Use the WeatherRadar to see where the storms will occur today.

The Mountain West, Southwest, Great Basin and much of California will have a quiet and sun-filled afternoon. The Northwest and immediate Pacific Coast will deal with some clouds while showers arrive along the Pacific Northwest coast later today. Temperatures will be in the triple digits in the Southwest while most other places will be in the 70s and 80s. The immediate West Coast, where clouds linger, will struggle to get out of the 60s.
