Daily Briefing
Monsoon brings flood threat

Monsoonal moisture brings the risk of flash flooding in the Southwest. Cooler air holds steady across the Plains, Midwest and Northeast, while the heat remains persistent in the Pacific Northwest. These details, along with our daily tropical outlook, are published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

Showers and storms will dot the Plains and Southwest today, bringing the threat of flooding, especially in the Southwest, where monsoonal moisture may produce some heavy downpours.

Monsoon moisture brings the risk of flash flooding to the Southwest.

The eastern half of the country will remain mostly dry, with just a few showers developing along a stalled front, and seabreeze thunderstorms forming in Florida. Much of the Plains, Great Lakes and Northeast will experience cooler-than-average temperatures and sunshine.

Temperatures will stay above average across the Pacific Northwest while more comfortable highs in the 70s and 80s stretch from the Plains to the Northeast. Keep an eye on the TemperatureRadar to see if more comfortable highs are in your forecast.

Tropical Update

Tropical Storm Fernand is northeast of Bermuda and continues to move north-northwest. This storm will not impact land and is expected to dissipate by the end of the week.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
