Daily briefing
Monster heat wave unfurls

A massive heat wave continues today across the East and Midwest, with possible record temperatures occurring. A few storms will bring relief to the Plains while the West gets a bit of a break. The Weather & Radar daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET with the latest U.S. forecast and updated tropical information.

A big high pressure settling over the Southeast will produce a hot and sunny Monday throughout much of the central Plains, Midwest, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast.

Record-breaking highs in the upper 90s will be common with triple-digit highs possible in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City. The TemperatureRadar has the latest forecast highs. A few storms will develop across the Gulf Coast and Southeast within the high heat.

On the western flank of the heat, a slow-moving cold front will produce afternoon storms from New Mexico northeastward into the western Great Lakes and the Upper Midwest. The WeatherRadar can be used to help track these systems.

The Western U.S. will have a quiet start to the new work week. Highs will be in the 70s across the Mountain West and Northwest, with 80s across southern California. The hot deserts will be in the 90s to triple digits.

Tropical Update

We are keeping an eye on an area of low pressure that's 500 miles east of Bermuda. This circulation has sustained winds of 30 to 35 mph. A short-lived tropical storm or depression is possible later today, but it will be no threat to land. This low will move into unfavorable conditions tomorrow and will weaken.
