Snow sweeps into Midwest, Great Lakes

Low pressure brings snow and gusty winds to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today. Another system will start to bring moisture to the Pacific Northwest. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

The WeatherRadar shows a low-pressure system bringing snow to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today. As this low moves off on Thursday, a significant lake effect snow event is expected to begin. Moisture from the next Pacific storm system will also move into parts of Oregon today, with scattered snow and rain across the northern Rockies.

While snow will be tapering off in cities like Minneapolis this morning, it will be increasing in cities like Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wis., and Chicago. Later in the day, heavy snow spreads into Michigan, causing travel trouble in cities like Grand Rapids, Mich., and Detroit.

In addition to snow, gusty winds will create blizzard-like conditions across the Great Lakes at times. Cities like Milwaukee, Chicago, and Detroit will see gusts higher than 50 mph.

Chilly highs in the 20s and 30s will dip down across the northern Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today. While the central U.S. will be below average, warmer-than-average highs are expected on both coasts. Florida will see highs in the 80s, while 60s and 70s stretch up to the Northeast. The West Coast and Southwest will also see highs in the 60s and 70s.

Tropical Update

Tropical activity is not expected over the next several days. We continue to monitor the tropics as the Atlantic Hurricane Season lasts until November 30.
