Daily Briefing
Storms linger across South

A stationary front brings showers, storms and a flood threat to parts of the South. Cooler-than-average air lingers across much of the country. These details, along with our daily tropical outlook, are published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows another day of active weather, as more storms fire up along the Plains and Rockies. A stationary front will also bring downpours to portions of Texas and the South.

Flash flooding will be possible in cities like Roswell, N.M., Amarillo, Texas, Shreveport, La., Hattiesburg, Miss., and Selma, Ala.

Cooler-than-average temperatures continue today across much of the country, with a few exceptions. Warmer-than-average highs are expected in the Pacific Northwest, parts of the northern Plains and south and west Texas.

The TemperatureRadar shows highs in the 80s and 90s in the Northwest, with highs in the mid- and upper-90s across much of Texas.

Tropical Update

A tropical wave is expected to emerge off the coast of Africa this weekend and may undergo some gradual development next week.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
