Daily briefing
Trough brings shift to eastern two-thirds

A cold air blast, gusty winds, rain and snow are on the menu as a low-pressure trough drives further south and east across the eastern two-thirds. The West will have above-average temperatures and quiet skies. The daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

A low-pressure trough deepens today across the eastern two-thirds. This brings a plethora of weather, including gusty winds reaching as far south as South Texas and temperatures in the teens and 20s throughout the Upper Midwest, with highs only reaching into the 30s in the mid-Mississippi Valley.

The rain and snow accompanying this system will sweep south and east today. Those seeing only rainfall are along the western Tennessee Valley and southward through Florida and the Southeast. Snow will stick to the northern flank of the system from the Dakotas through the Upper Great Lakes.

Rain is the appetizer across the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. As colder air filters in throughout the day, the rain shifts to snowfall. Follow the timing on the WeatherRadar.

The western U.S. is quiet with above-average high temperatures.
