Daily briefing: Winter locked into northern tier

Daily briefing
Winter locked into northern tier

Not to sound like a broken record, but the northern tier will remain the active weather spot across the U.S. for the final day this week. The South stays quiet. This is included in today's daily briefing, published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

There are three spots of wintry weather showing up on the WeatherRadar today. The first two, one rolling across the central Appalachians and into the southern Mid-Atlantic and another rolling through the Great Lakes, are quick-moving clippers bringing a burst of snow.

Northern tier systems
Three systems will cause trouble across the northern tier.

The other northern tier system moving across the northern Rockies and the Northwest is associated with an atmospheric river event that has soaked the area all week. More rain will fall across the Northwest while snow falls over the mountains.

The U.S. southern tier, stretching from California to the Southeast, will be full of sunshine today. The TemperatureRadar shows highs in the 50s and 60s, with 70s across southern California, the Southwest, southern Texas and southern Florida.

The coldest weather will be found in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. A freshly arriving Arctic air mass will only produce highs in the single digits in the Dakotas, with teens and 20s throughout the Midwest.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
