Dangerous nighttime tornado threat

Powerful severe storms will bring a nighttime tornado threat to millions. Jonathan Petramala will bring us the latest updates from the field all weekend.

A multi-day severe weather outbreak is underway and strong tornadoes are a threat tonight, during the day on Saturday and after dark on Saturday.

The threat of nighttime tornadoes is especially concerning, something Jonathan Petramala mentioned in his report from Port Gibson, Miss.

Tornadoes that happen in the dark are twice as likely to be deadly. Overnight tornadoes are particularly deadly because people have trouble receiving warnings and getting to shelter at night, particularly in states with high proportions of mobile homes.

It's also harder to see tornadoes at night unless they are lit by lightning. With the potential for strong overnight tornadoes, you'll want to make sure your alerts are turned up loud!
