What to do in a flood

Floods are one of the most common weather disasters in the U.S.; failure to take action could lead to injury or death. Here's what to do if you find yourself caught by rising waters.

Flooding is a common weather hazard that Weather & Radar users have to deal with. Depending on the type of flooding, water can rise slowly or very quickly, as in a flash flood. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot can sweep your vehicle away.

If flooding is forecast, what should you do? First, check your local forecast on the Weather & Radar app and keep an eye on the WeatherRadar and the RainRadar. Our team of expert meteorologists will let you know when the threat of flooding is rising in your area.

Next, make sure your app alerts are turned on. Our alert system will inform you when dangerous conditions are building in your area. If flood alerts are active, seek shelter immediately. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.

Also, pay attention to local authorities and have multiple ways of getting alerts. If you are told to evacuate, leave immediately for higher ground. Get to the highest level if trapped in a building. Only get on the roof if necessary, and once there, signal for help. Do not move to a closed attic to avoid getting trapped by rising floodwater.

If you are trapped in a vehicle, stay inside if you are trapped in rapidly moving water. Get on the roof if water is rising inside the car.
