Severe thunderstorms on Wednesday evening and overnight caused destruction across multiple states, resulting in at least one death in Michigan and several injuries in the Mid-Atlantic.

In Michigan, a sudden EF1 tornado with 95 mph winds struck Livonia, downing trees over a 5.5-mile path. The tornado was very quick to form which prevented the activation of sirens across the town and even warnings from the National Weather Service

The tornado toppled a large tree over a home, killing a 2-year-old boy and critically injuring his mother. A 2-week-old sibling in another room was unharmed. Emergency responders worked for over an hour to clear the roof and collapsed tree.

In Maryland, a tornado hit Gaithersburg in Montgomery County, leading to collapsed structures and trapped residents. Among the notable damage was a tree collapse that injured five people, with at least one sustaining serious injury. All injured individuals were taken to local hospitals after emergency workers responded to the scene.

Did you know?

Tornadoes in Maryland are relatively rare compared to other parts of the United States, especially in June. On average, Maryland experiences about 10 tornadoes per year, with May through July being the most active months due to spring and summer thunderstorms

The tornado outbreak was triggered by severe thunderstorms moving along a cold front. Although the tornado risk was considered low, low risk does not mean no risk. Tornadoes can still occur and cause significant damage, especially when they hit populated areas, as seen on Wednesday.

The WeatherRadar shows storms moving off the Eastern Seaboard today, with much cooler conditions moving in behind the front. The risk of strong storms and tornados shifts towards the Central Plains, including the town of Kansas City, and Grand Island, Neb.
