Early autumn cold snap
First widespread frost & freeze event

The first widespread frost and freeze this season is anticipated for the north-central U.S., with cold fronts set to spread cool conditions across the Eastern U.S.

As autumn takes hold, a series of cold fronts will introduce chilly Canadian air across the north-central U.S. by as early as Friday, dramatically dropping temperatures from the current balmy 70s and 80s to near or even below freezing. While both Friday and Saturday have potential for sub-freezing temperatures, Saturday seems more likely to experience frost due to the expected reduction in winds. States that may see near to sub-freezing temperatures include the Dakotas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

This cold snap is not just a concern for those looking for their winter coats. There's a real concern about the crops and vegetation in the Midwest that haven't been harvested yet.

By the weekend, this chilly wave will sweep into the Eastern U.S., ensuring unseasonably cold conditions persist into the early days of next week. In the higher elevations of the Appalachians, temperatures are anticipated to drop below freezing.

Meanwhile, regions like the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast can expect overnight temperatures ranging from the low to mid-40s. Even the Deep South, including areas like the Florida Panhandle, will feel the chill, with temperatures dipping into the upper 40s and lower 50s. Farmers, gardeners, and pet owners in the north-central U.S. should stay attentive to the changing weather! Don't forget to protect your plants and give your furry friends some extra warmth.
