    Eerie red moon tonight

01:24 PM
August 27, 2026

Striking view
Catch an eerie red moon

Halloween is more than two months away, but if you stay up late enough tonight, you'll be greeted by a spooky sight as the moon turns blood red.

Skywatchers will have a front-row seat tonight as a deep partial lunar eclipse darkens nearly the entire full moon. At its peak, about 96% of the Moon will be covered by Earth's darkest shadow, creating a stunning copper-red glow that will closely resemble a total lunar eclipse.

The eclipse begins tonight as the Moon gradually enters Earth's shadow, with the most dramatic views occurring around 12:12 a.m. EDT (11:12 p.m. CDT, 10:12 p.m. MDT, and 9:12 p.m. PDT). Unlike a solar eclipse, this event is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. And we want to see what you're seeing. Did you know you can send us videos in-app?

Clear skies will provide the best viewing experience, so check the WeatherRadar before heading outside. If conditions cooperate, this will be one of the most impressive lunar eclipses visible until late 2028.
