Catastrophic floods have struck the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states this week. At least 11 people have died, but these are early estimates.

An extra-tropical cyclone off the Brazilian coast has caused heavy and persistent rains, resulting in severe flooding across the country's southeastern region.

In certain regions, the rainfall accumulation surpassed 9 inches within a span of less than 20 hours, which is roughly equivalent to the average monthly precipitation for this area.

The most affected states are Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, in the southern part of the country. At least 11 people are dead and 20 others are still missing.

As reported by Civil Protection, the impact of the recent events has affected 40 municipalities, resulting in approximately 5,000 damaged houses and over 84,000 individuals left without electricity. The immediate focus is now on delivering essential humanitarian assistance to the affected regions.
