Fla. Keys bleaching forces swift action

Near record-breaking hot water temperatures are forcing scientists into action across the Florida Keys to save vulnerable coral reefs.

Water temperatures across the Florida Keys have hit the hottest recorded temperatures seen since satellite measurements have begun. As we explained in the story linked below, these temperatures are causing coral bleaching to accelerate.

Federal, State, and local governments, along with university partners and private restoration groups have sprung into action to try to save the vulnerable coral. Nurseries used to grow and restore the reefs are being moved to deeper and cooler water or to indoor, climate-controlled tanks for safekeeping. For coral too established to move, they are even considering placing shade over vulnerable coral to reduce water temperatures.

Even with the rescue efforts, the reefs remain vulnerable as long as water temperatures remain elevated – generally, 88 degree-plus temperatures cause coral bleaching. Current forecasts do not bode well. The water around the Florida Keys, barring a tropical system churning up the water and lowering the temperatures, will likely remain at temperatures that stress coral reefs through at least September. There is growing concern that coral bleaching could develop off southeastern Florida as summer water temperatures continue to rise there too.
