Breakfast Brief
Francine bears down on Louisiana

Hurricane Francine is set to bring life-threatening storm surge, flooding and damaging wind, to the Louisiana coast this evening. Fire concerns continue across the Great Basin and parts of the high Plains.

Hurricane Francine is the sixth-named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season and will make landfall in Louisiana this evening. Elsewhere across the U.S., the weather remains fairly quiet, with just a few trouble spots.

This day in weather history

On this day in 1961- Very large and slow moving Hurricane Carla made landfall near Port Lavaca TX. Carla battered the central Texas coast with wind gusts to 175 mph, and up to 16 inches of rain, and spawned a vicious tornado which swept across Galveston Island killing eight persons. The hurricane claimed 45 lives, and caused 300 million dollars damage.

Fire Weather will continue across the Great Basin and into the Plains today. With low humidity, gusty winds and warm temperatures, fire can spread quickly. Keep an eye on the WindRadar and use caution. Numerous fires are also affecting air quality. Use our air quality tool to check conditions in your neck of the woods.

The WeatherRadar shows rain and even a few storms soaking the Pacific Northwest this morning and continuing for the rest of today. This system will push toward the Rockies and Plains this afternoon and evening.

Except for the Gulf Coast, the rest of the country will experience quiet weather today. High temperatures along and east of the Mississippi River will generally reach the 70s and 80s. A few 60s are possible across the higher elevations of the Northeast, with isolated 90s for the Lower Midwest and Tennessee Valley.

Tropical update:

Francine is currently a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to make landfall this evening in Louisiana as a strong Category 1 or low-end Category 2 storm. As this storm moves in, hurricane-force winds, up to 10 feet of storm surge, and nearly a foot of rain are expected. Conditions will worsen throughout the day in southern Louisiana.
