From Nadine to Kristy

Tropical Storm Nadine made landfall in Belize around noon on Oct. 20 and fell apart over land as it tracked toward the Pacific Ocean. However, the end of Nadine was the beginning of Hurricane Kristy.

It's something straight out of a Halloween tale: a dying storm returns to life as a powerful hurricane! The remnants of the briefly-lived Tropical Storm Nadine have regenerated into powerful Category 4 Major Hurricane Kristy in the Pacific. You can see this incredible transformation on the WeatherRadar.

As of Thursday morning, Hurricane Kristy has sustained winds of 150 mph and is moving west at 17 mph. While this storm is impressive, it poses no risk to land and is expected to gradually weaken over the weekend and into early next week before dissipating.

How our hurricane alerts workread more

Tropical systems often cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific and vice-versa. During this process, interaction with land typically weakens tropical systems. However, remnant lows can provide an area of spin for new tropical systems to develop. The remnants of Tropical Depression Eleven E in the Pacific aided in Hurricane Milton's development as they crossed the Bay of Campeche.

Before 2000, all storms that crossed from the Pacific to the Atlantic and vice-versa gained new names. Now, storms that do not dissipate during the crossing keep their names. With just over a month to go in hurricane season, there's still time for development. Make sure your hurricane alerts are on, and check out our Breakfast Brief every morning for the latest information.
