Make the most of the space
Getting started with windowsill gardens

For most people, the windowsill plays host to the odd knick-knack contributing nothing to the home. So why not add life to the home with a miniature garden?

Location, location, location

Getting the location correct indoors is vital to a plentiful harvest. Wherever possible south-facing windows should be used for indoor gardens providing the most amount of sunlight throughout the day. Most varieties of herb require at least four hours of direct sunlight although you could supplement this with artificial light.

Herb garden

Choice of plant

There are many varieties of vegetable and herb that thrive indoors. Some easier to manage than others. Certain choices can grow from the cast-offs from regular grocery shopping. Spring onions and garlic are both perfect here. The bulb from a spring onion can grow in water alone while a whole planted garlic clove will begin to show shoots within days.

In terms of herbs, basil, mint and thyme can all grow in small areas and are perfect for anyone just getting started. Utilizing window space for growth is ideal for those with small gardens or who live in an area not conducive to plant life, try it out this season.
