Haboob season starts
Arizona's dusty thunderstorms

The Southwest monsoon is perking up across Arizona and New Mexico, triggering desert afternoon thunderstorms. These storms often kick up massive dust storms called haboobs.

Haboobs are massive clouds of dust and sand that develop along the gusty outflows of thunderstorms. These slow-moving dust clouds can cause near-zero visibility at ground levels and cause respiratory issues.

If you are on the road, pull aside, put on your car's lights and hazards to alert others of your position.

Additional haboobs are possible across the Southwest today. Track the development of the storms that produce them using the WeatherRadar.
