On Sunday evening, an aircraft was severely damaged by large hail during its approach to Vienna Airport in Austria. The Austrian Airlines plane flew into a hailstorm at about 18,000 feet altitude.

The cockpit windows were completely shattered by the hail. Fortunately, they were not broken and there was no loss of cabin pressure. The fairing on the nose of the fuselage containing the weather radar was also torn off.

The WeatherRadar image from Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. local time shows the hailstorm the plane encountered.

The Airbus A320, which took off from Palma de Mallorca off the Mediterranean coast of Spain, remained operational and was able to land safely at Vienna’s International Airport after some delay. The passengers escaped with only a moment of shock.

An hour later, The same thunderstorm produced a tornado on the border between eastern Austria and Hungary. It has been an active couple of days across Europe, with major hail and flooding occurring. The video below shows the storminess across the continent:

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
