A day for all to enjoy
Happy Pi Day

Pi

Today is March 14, 2022, also known as Pi Day! There are many cool facts about pi (π), known as the most studied number in mathematics.

Happy Pi Day! Pi's first three digits are 3.14, making March 14th an appropriate choice for the celebration. Whether you’re celebrating by reciting the number π for as long as you can or by eating your favorite pie dessert, you can also learn more about about this well-known number.

How did we get Pi Day? According to piday.org, a physicist named Larry Shaw, known as the Prince of Pi, began the March 14th celebration in the Exploratorium Science Museum in San Francisco. He saw it as a nice way to bring the staff at the Exploratorium together and thus Pi Day was born!

In school, meteorologists often used π in their mathematic equations as they studied atmospheric patterns. So, we are very well versed here at Weather & Radar in how important π is to the weather community!

The exact value of π can NEVER be calculated. This means equations that use π are never really exact. For example, calculating the circumference of a circle requires the equation 2πr or 2 x π x the radius of the circle. Without knowing the exact value of π, we never know the exact circumference of a circle, but we can come very close!

The number π is infinitely long. This means you can spend as much time as you want memorizing the digits in the number, but you will never be finished. It’s a cool trick for parties though!
