Lala is set to become a hurricane with a possible record-making landfall on the Big Island in Hawaii.

A big weekend is upon the Hawaiian Islands. The Big Island could have its first recorded hurricane landfall. Although there have been close drive-bys, the island chain hasn't had a hurricane make landfall in 34 years.

Waves greater than 30 feet, flooding rains and damaging winds are coming with Tropical Storm Lala, with a forecast to become a Category 1 hurricane overnight Friday into Saturday. A landfall on the southern tip of the Big Island is possible late Saturday night, local time.

Hurricane Iniki was the last hurricane to make landfall on the island chain in 1992, with official landfall recorded in far western Kauai. Lala could make landfall as a hurricane on the Big Island of Hawaii, a first in the island's recorded history.
