Heatwave begins
Hotter in Detroit than Miami

Detroit has a high temperature forecast of 94 on Tuesday while Miami is forecast to reach 92.

Yes, it's hotter in some spots around the Great Lakes than it is in South Florida on Tuesday. The intense heatwave in the East is just getting started, and Detroit's residents will have an afternoon high in the mid-90s.

Florida is known for its hot and humid weather, but everyone can get a taste in the summer months when big heat waves come to town. This next one is just beginning across the East.

Detroit is 1,150 miles north. How is it hotter than Miami?

The two cities are sitting in two different air masses. Thanks to the high pressure sitting in the Deep South, warm, dry air out of the south and southwest is being pushed northward into Michigan. The high temperature forecast for Detroit is set to be higher than Miami's for the next few days due to the stationary high.

Miami, albeit pretty hot and humid just about all year long, partially thanks to the tropical maritime air mass, does technically have natural cooling capability due to the nearby water. It's hot, but today, it could always be Detroit hot.
