High flood risk for days, +8 inches possible

Texas & Deep South
High flood risk for days, +8 inches possible

A very wet pattern will continue across Texas and parts of the Deep South this week. Flooding concerns will increase beginning Sunday, with the threat expected to persist through at least Thursday along the Texas coast and across portions of Central and Interior Texas.

On Sunday, the risk of flash flooding will be present across much of Texas, except in the northern Panhandle. The highest rain chances will stretch from the Hill Country southeastward to the Gulf Coast. Flash flood risk remains in effect for many areas through at least Tuesday evening. Life-threatening flooding is possible in locations under a Flood watch. Some isolated areas could receive more than 8 inches of rainfall, with much of it falling in a short period. This could cause rivers, creeks, streams, and other flood-prone areas to rise rapidly.

Stay away from floods

Turn Around, Don't Drown. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Do not underestimate floodwaters. Water depths can be difficult to judge and may be much deeper than they appear.

Southeast Texas Facing Prolonged Heavy Rain

The WeatherRadar shows that the rain has already begun across Southeast Texas on Sunday morning and will continue moving inland from the Gulf Coast through the coming days. A deep plume of tropical moisture flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico will interact with a slow-moving frontal boundary draped across Central and Southeast Texas. This combination will keep rain chances elevated and maintain a significant flood threat throughout much of the week.

The Houston metro area could receive between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall from Sunday through Tuesday, with isolated locations potentially picking up around 6 inches. Thunderstorms can also produce intense rainfall in a short time. In addition, a few storms could become strong to severe, bringing frequent lightning, gusty winds, and localized flooding.

For the Deep South, two separate rounds of heavy rain are expected this week.

The first wave will impact much of Louisiana from Sunday through Tuesday night. Rain chances should decrease by Wednesday into Wednesday evening before a tropical wave tracks eastward along the central Gulf Coast. This will help enhance the chance of another round of heavy rainfall to close out the work week.

The early-week flood risk could bring heavy rain from Louisiana eastward into southern Mississippi and Alabama. Widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are likely, with locally higher amounts possible in isolated areas. Flash flooding will be possible, so avoid flooded roads and low-lying areas. Water may be deeper than it appears.

A second round of heavy rain later in the week could bring another widespread 3 to 5 inches of rainfall across parts of Louisiana and the Deep South, further increasing the risk for flooding in areas that have already seen heavy rain.
