Holiday weekend severe threat

As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, more rounds of storms are expected across the Plains, Midwest, and South.

With a big travel day ahead as well as a popular holiday weekend for outdoor activities, it's important to pay close attention to the forecast. Today's severe weather threat extends from central Texas to the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio valleys and the southwestern Great Lakes, where a slight risk, a level 2 out of 5 of severe weather, is in place. Two areas in Texas and Oklahoma and in the Midwest are highlighted under an enhanced risk, a level 3 out of 5 of severe storms.

Friday's severe risk

Today's risk extends across major metro areas like the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, Memphis, Tenn., St. Louis, and Chicago. Damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes are all possible, with the threats growing into the afternoon and evening. A greater severe weather threat is brewing for the weekend. An enhanced risk, a level 3 out of 5 of severe storms, extends across the central Plains on Saturday and includes Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kan. A strong tornado and hail threat, along with the risk of damaging winds, is expected to develop late in the day into the evening and nighttime hours.

Sunday brings the risk of severe storms to parts of the Ohio, mid-Mississippi, and Tennessee valleys, where an enhanced risk is in place. Cities such as Little Rock, Ark., St. Louis, Louisville, Ky., and Indianapolis could see powerful storms Sunday into Sunday night.

Strong storms also look likely on Memorial Day for parts of the South and Mid-Atlantic. Check back in with Weather & Radar for the latest forecast.
