Hurricane Season
Tips on how to plan for the next storm

Hurricane season teaser

It only takes one storm, regardless of category, to make a huge impact on your community and your well-being. As the activity perks up, here are some hurricane prep tips.

Get your home ready and protected:

  • Trim nearby trees: This is often your responsibility as a homeowner.
  • Securing loose objects in your yard, patio, or balconies: know where you would place the objects if you need to bring them indoors.
  • Have a plan to leave your vehicle in a secure place to protect it if a hurricane threatens.
  • Do you need plywood to cover your windows? Are your shutters functioning correctly? Tools and materials often fly off the hardware store shelves as soon as there is a tropical threat. This could also help you avoid long lines.

Evacuation routes & shelters:

  • Find out if you are in an evacuation zone, learn which routes are available to you and how to use them.
  • To shelter, you can go to hotels or government-run shelters.
  • If you have pets, make sure they can stay too. Unfortunately, not all hotels or shelters accept pets. You can call your county’s emergency management to find out.

Prepare your disaster kit:

You should assemble a disaster kit that will help support you through what might be a lengthy and uncomfortable aftermath. Some essential items that should be included in your kit are:

  • Keep important documents in sealed, waterproof containers
  • Nonperishable food/Water
  • Medicine, order your prescriptions ahead
  • Batteries, radios, flashlights, and chargers
  • Board games to entertain the kids.
  • Gasoline for generator
  • Cash
  • Cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, and masks if you are going to a shelter.

Our team of meteorologists at Weather & Radar will be watching the tropics closely throughout the season and bring you prompt updates and forecasts.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
