Milton's outbreak
Hurricanes and tornadoes

A tornado outbreak preceded Hurricane Milton's landfall, with at least 19 confirmed tornadoes. The video above shows terrifying footage of one of these tornadoes in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Hours before Hurricane Milton's landfall, a tornado outbreak impacted the Florida Peninsula. The outer bands of landfilling hurricanes can be prolific tornado producers, and this was the case with Milton. The National Weather Service has confirmed at least 19 tornadoes. The tornado in Palm Beach Gardens has a preliminary rating of EF-3.

Landfalling tropical systems often produce tornadoes, with some even producing tornado outbreaks. Hurricanes have the ingredients needed to produce tornadoes, including heat, moisture and winds that change speed and direction with height. Milton's outer bands traveled over Florida during peak heating, which enhanced its ability to produce tornadoes.

Tornadoes are most common in the right-front quadrant of hurricanes. This area experiences the strongest winds and greatest instability, increasing the likelihood of tornado formation.
