A fascinating event recently took place in Iceland. Northern lights could be seen in the sky above the glowing lava of the still-active Grindavik volcano.

Volcano has been spewing lava for weeks

The volcano, which is only around 25 miles from the capital Reykjavik, erupted for the fourth time in just a few months in mid-March.

Initially, the lava poured out of a fissure around 2 miles long. Gradually, the eruption from this fissure became weaker and craters formed on the fissure.

The glowing lava seen in the image above is still flowing from one of the fissures. However, the amount of magma has now decreased.

End of the eruption not in sight

Whether the volcanic eruption could soon come to an end is currently uncertain. The ground in the area of the volcano is still heaving and there were increased earthquakes just days ago, on Monday, April 22nd.

Experts suggest that the current eruption could intensify again, or possibly even open up new fissures in the volcano.
