Illinois & Indiana
Double-whammy severe storm threat

WeatherRadar: Two rounds of severe weather are in the forecast for Wednesday.
WeatherRadar: Two rounds of severe weather are in the forecast for Wednesday.

Dangerous severe weather is in Wednesday's forecast in the Midwest as a quick-moving disturbance stirs up multiple tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and flooding rains.

From Wichita, Kan., to Detroit, and especially for places like Springfield and Peoria, Ill., and Lafayette, Ind., a severe weather risk is in place for the afternoon and evening. Storms are already moving into the Midwest to bring the first hit, but afternoon regeneration poses the second pass through.

As much as a moderate risk - a level 4 out of 5 on the severity scale - has been issued for the central Illinois and west-central Indiana residents. The risk includes multiple strong tornadoes, and, given the available energy, they could form and move through very quickly.

Many of these storms are forecast during the evening work commute, so many will be on the roadways. While it may be tempting, sheltering under a bridge or overpass is dangerous during a tornado, as wind speeds can actually increase here due to the narrow space. Flying debris can also be tossed through.

Not to be outdone, the heavy rains that can cause flash flooding today can slow you down on the roads. It will be important to pay close attention to the storm timing on the WeatherRadar to know the best window to head out.
