Impacts, recap
Francine: The third US landfall of 2024

Hurricane Francine made landfall as a category 2 hurricane 30 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, La., on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Flooding rains, severe winds, storm surge and structural damage are all part of the story.

Hurricane Francine was the third landfalling tropical system in the U.S. of the 2024 season (behind Beryl and Debby) and it hit as a category 2 in the Parrish of Terrebonne. On Thursday, thousands woke up to no power, especially across southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Francine left behind several inches of water with almost 10 inches piling up in Louisiana. Not surprisingly, Louisiana also had the highest peak winds reaching 96 mph.

The heavy rainfall impacted many and a flash flood emergency was issued in New Orleans. A man was heroically rescued after his truck was submerged in deep floodwaters.

Significant structural damage was also reported as the winds and storm surge pounded Louisiana. Our weather reporter, Jonathan Petramala, was on the scene documenting the event.

Francine was the 8th category 2 hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana since 2000. The hurricane was officially upgraded to a category 2 just hours before landfall.
